About the Learning Resource Center
The resources held by the Learning Resource Center (LRC) of the Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia are specific to the one (1) degree offered by the institution. The LRC maintains subscription to 35 anesthesia-related journals, with a 10-year collection of past issues for many of the titles. Of its approximately 400 volumes, 350 have a specific focus in anesthesia.
The LRC employs a full-time librarian, whose title is Learning Resource Center and Information Systems Support Director. The LRC is open for student use during regular school hours and also offers some after-hours access for students. The Information Technology Resources are evaluated annually by junior (first year) and senior (second year) students, as well as by faculty members.
The LRC currently maintains a computer laboratory, which consists of 10 desktop computers with internet access. Since MTSA typically has only one (1) class on campus at a time, the student-to-computer ratio in the computer lab is approximately seven (7) students to one (1) desktop computer. Wireless internet access is available throughout MTSA’s campus.
Through a collaborative agreement with Vanderbilt University medical Center Library, students have VUnetIDs and have walk-in access to all of the Vanderbilt University Libraries, including Eskind Biomedical Library’s online and print resources. In addition to having access to additional anesthesia-related materials, the Eskind Biomedical Library also contains journals and other materials that encompass a broader range of subjects.
MTSA’s Learning Resource Center and Information Systems Support Director is available during regular MTSA business hours to assist students. The LRC maintains consortia lending agreements through the Tennessee Health Sciences Library Association (THeSLA), as well as through the National Library of Medicine’s Freeshare consortium. MTSA’s Learning Resource Center and Information Systems Support Director is available to locate articles for students or faculty members through these interlibrary loan processes. Interlibrary loan agreements exist with other area health care facilities as well, including St. Thomas Hospital and Baptist Hospital, both of which are located in Nashville, Tennessee.
During the students’ senior (second) year, and particularly when they are affiliating at out-of-site clinical locations, MTSA has agreements that allow its students to use the medical library of the affiliate. Currently, this includes Nationwide (Columbus) Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
